Components of HDI PURE FTEC-1

1. Granular activated carbon

The granulated activated carbon in the HDI PURE FTEC-1 unit is derived from extremely high-quality carbon that has been processed to increase its adsorption properties. In this layer, chlorine and other volatile organic compounds are removed by 3 methods: 1) they are adsorbed to the exterior of the carbon granules; 2) they move into the carbon pores; 3) they are adsorbed to the interior walls of the carbon. One teaspoon of granular activated carbon has the surface area the size of a football field.

2. Activated coral powder

Coral is activated by thoroughly rinsing and subjecting it to a high-heat treatment process. This results in coral powder in its purest form that increases the alkalinity of the water while integrating minerals such as calcium and magnesium, giving it a smooth and refreshing taste.

3. Filar Technology

Filar Technology or Filartech™ is based on fiber membrane technology used for artificial kidneys that purify blood in hemodialysis treatments. HDI PURE FTEC-1 is made in Japan and produced in a facility using similar equipment designed to produce kidney hemodialysis systems.

Each Filartech™ cartridge in HDI PURE FTEC-1 consists of 1,728 specially treated fibers that loop within the unit. Filartech™ fibers are made of polysulfone, a thermoplastic polymer known for its high strength and high dimensional stability. They are highly resistant to mineral acids, alkali and electrolytes in pH ranging from 2 to 13. They are also resistant to oxidizing agents, surfactants and hydrocarbon oils. They are able to offer extremely high flow rates at very low differential pressures when compared to other thermoplastic polymers.


Each Filartech fiber is made up of 3 separate layers and has 1 trillion pores up to 0.1 micron each. The pores of the outer layer are structured to be tiny and very precise whereas the intermediate and internal layers are rougher. This results in high water permeability as well as high removal ability. Together, the Filartech fibers remove rust, bacteria*, coliform bacilli, microorganisms and microscopic impurities from the water without removing calcium, magnesium and other essential minerals.

*Laboratory tests show that the unit removes 99.999% of bacteria, meeting the Japan Water Purifier Association (JWPA) Voluntary Standards for Water Purifiers.
